Committees’ recent meetings – 7 July 2020
This week committees discussed water meter complaints, cancellation of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, and scheduling a sitting on the Kurdistani areas outside the KRG administration. MPs also visited the areas hit by Turkey and Iran's recent military campaigns.
Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Religious Affairs Committee convey condolences on death of Sufi Muslim order’s leader Sheikh Kasnazani
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq, Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami and the Religious Affairs and Endowments Committee expressed their condolences on the death of Sheikh Muhammad Shiekh Abdulkarim Kasnazani, the spiritual leader of the Qadiri Kasnazani Sufi Muslims.
Parliament committees visit border areas to look into Turkey and Iran’s shelling of civilian areas
A joint delegation of MPs from the Peshmerga, Interior and Relations committees on 4, 5 and 6 July visited the border areas of Erbil, Slemani and Duhok to see for themselves the damage caused by Turkey and Iran’s military campaigns inside Kurdistan Region.
Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq meets with France’s Consul General Olivier Decottignies
The Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament Dr. Rewas Faiq on 7 July welcomed France’s Consul General in Kurdistan Region, Olivier Decottignies. They discussed the political situation in Iraq, Kurdistan and the wider region, especially the risk of the re-emergence of ISIS and the Arabization of Kurdistani areas outside the KRG Administrative area, such as Kirkuk.
Committees' recent meetings - 5 July 2020
In recent meetings committees decided to visit border villages hit by Turkey's and Iran's military attacks; met the Martyrs Affairs Minister to discuss removing fraudulent claims from former political prisoners lists; and discussed some private universities' failure to follow government instructions to reduce students fees.
MPs raise pressing financial, health and security issues at sitting; vote to extend spring session until 1 August
Kurdistan Parliament MPs on 29 June voted to extend by 30 days the deadline for submitting their legislative proposals, and to extend the current spring session by a month, to end on 1 August. The purpose is to compensate for the delays caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Sixty MPs voted in favour of the deadline extension, and 70 voted in favour extending the spring session.

The Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament calls MPs to a sitting on Monday 29th June 2020 at 1pm – the 5th ordinary sitting of the spring session of the second year of the Kurdistan Parliament’s fifth term.
Parliament’s Presidency condemns deadly ISIS attacks on Kakayi villages in Khanaqin
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq and Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami in statements condemned ISIS terrorist attacks on 13 June on the Kakayi villages of Merkhas and Dara in Khanaqin. The Kakayi are a Kurdish religious minority. Parliament's Presidency called on the Iraqi security forces and the Peshmerga to coordinate to protect civilians in the areas.
Committees' recent meetings - 25 June 2020
The Finance Committee is looking into the KRG's decisions to cut salaries by 21% in the wake of the financial crisis, to increase revenue from taxes and customs, and to start implementing the Reform Law in July. The Human Rights Committee visited prisons directorates to look at conditions, rights and Coronavirus measures.
