Kurdistan’s Provincial Councils ask Parliament for legislative amendments

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed on 2nd July chaired a meeting with the leadership of Erbil, Slemani and Duhok provincial councils, who requested amendments to legislation governing their work and terms of office.

Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed meets Assyrian Democratic Movement delegation

Today 2nd of June 2019, Dr. Fareed meets a delegation from the Assyrian Democratic Movement, led by Deputy Secretary Yaqub Gorgis. Speaker Fareed welcomed the delegation and said that the peaceful coexistence between the different ethnic and religious communities in Kurdistan Region is underwritten by legislation.

Summary of committees’ recent meetings – 3 July 2019

This week the Health Committee met representatives of Erbil's medicines trading companies to gather evidence on the problems in the pharmaceuticals trade, and decided to meet representatives of Slemani and Duhok companies as well. The Integrity Committee will form a subcommittee to follow up on complaints about water smart meter bills.

The Legislative Committee discussed amending the narcotics law in Kurdistan Region, to bring it into line with Iraq's 2017 law that differentiates between drug dealers and users. MPs vote in favour of extending current Spring Session of Parliament by 15 days

Eight-four MPs on 30th June voted in favour of extending the current Spring Session of the Kurdistan Parliament by 15 days. The Spring Session ends on 1st July, but Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed requested the extension so that Parliament can accomplish important tasks before going into recess.

Kurdistan Region President, Speaker of Parliament Dr. Vala Fareed meet UN Security Council delegation in Baghdad

President Nechirvan Barzani, Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed and a Kurdistan Region delegation on 29 June in Baghdad met representatives of the United Nations Security Council. They asked the UN to help resolve outstanding issues between Kurdistan and Iraq, and counter violence and terrorism in the Kurdistani areas outside the KRG administrative areas.
