Parliament sits to debate prison conditions, question government minister

The Kurdistan Parliament on 16 September sat to debate prison conditions and inmates' rights and welfare. MPs heard the Parliament committee’s report on inmates in Kurdistan Region, and heard from the KRG minister the measures being taken to improve prison conditions.

Kurdistan Parliament unveils portrait of Mother Aisha

A portrait of the late Mother Aisha, who passed away in July, was unveiled in the Kurdistan Parliament building on 2 September by Speaker Rewas Faiq. Mother Aisha became a national symbol of Kurds’ sacrifices after losing her three Peshmerga sons killed on the same day in the war against ISIS in 2014.

Order of business for sitting of 2 September 2020, opening of Autumn Session

The Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament calls MPs to a sitting on Wednesday 2nd September 2020 at 1pm – the first ordinary sitting of the autumn session of the second year of the Parliament’s fifth term. The Presidency announces the order of business of the sitting as follows:

Parliament’s Presidency announces end of spring term of Parliament

Per Resolution number 6 of 2020, Kurdistan Parliament’s Presidency announces the end of the spring term of the second year of the fifth term of Parliament on 31 July 2020. From 1 August 2020, Parliament will be in recess.

MPs raise pressing financial, health and security issues at sitting; vote to extend spring session until 1 August

Kurdistan Parliament MPs on 29 June voted to extend by 30 days the deadline for submitting their legislative proposals, and to extend the current spring session by a month, to end on 1 August. The purpose is to compensate for the delays caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Sixty MPs voted in favour of the deadline extension, and 70 voted in favour extending the spring session.

Parliament’s Presidency condemns Turkey’s recent military attacks inside Kurdistan
