Kurdistan’s Provincial Councils ask Parliament for legislative amendments
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed on 2nd July chaired a meeting with the leadership of Erbil, Slemani and Duhok provincial councils, who requested amendments to legislation governing their work and terms of office.
Also at the meeting were Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami, Secretary Muna Kahveci, the Legislative Affairs Committee, and the Peshmerga, Interior, Security and Local Councils Committee.
The governing boards of Erbil, Slemani and Duhok provincial councils asked Parliament to amend several articles of Law No. 3 of 2009. They requested amendments to allow them to continue their work until provincial council elections are held in the future. The current councils’ mandate ended on 24th September 2018, but as provincial council elections have been delayed, the council members do not have the mandate to perform their duties. To avoid this legal vacuum until elections are held, they have asked for amendments so that they can carry out their work.
Speaker Fareed said that the parliamentary parties in coordination with expert committees would look into finding a solution as soon as possible.
