Summary of committees’ recent meetings – 1 July 2019

A summary of Kurdistan Parliament’s committees’ recent meetings and activities:

Legislative Affairs Committee

30 June - The committee held its regular weekly meeting headed by the committee chair, Bizhar Kochar (KDP). They reviewed their work and activities of the last few months. They decided to hold a workshop soon on the positive and negative points of Iraq’s criminal code. 

The committee also discussed whether Iraq’s law on narcotics should be applied in Kurdistan Region, considering the realities of narcotics use in Kurdish society. Iraq introduced a new law in 2017, which differentiates between drug dealers and users, but the Kurdistan Parliament has not yet enacted it into law in Kurdistan Region. They concluded that the committee should amend the law so that it can be implemented in Kurdistan Region.

Education, Higher Education, and Scientific Research Committee

30 June - The committee held its regular weekly meeting. They discussed the notes, requests, and complaints submitted to the committee, and decided to follow up on the all submissions as soon as possible. They formed a subcommittee to visit the Ministry of Education and the Directorate of Exams of the Kurdistan Region to follow up on the complaints regarding mistakes in Grade 12 high school final exam question papers. The committee decided to prepare a report about the issue on Wednesday and submit it to Parliament’s Presidency. 

Committee on Kurdistani Areas outside KRG Administrative Area

30 June - The committee held its regular weekly meeting, headed by the committee’s chair, Ms Jiwan Rojbayani (KDP). The chair briefed the committee on the meeting of all committees’ chairs with Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami, in which he reviewed and rated their past three months’ work.

The committee members discussed the latest developments in the Kurdistani Areas outside the KRG Administrative. They decided to visit the offices of the Kurdistan Parliament in Kirkuk, Shengal and Makhmour.
