Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed meets Germany’s Green Party Chairwoman Annalena Baerbock
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed on 25th June welcomed Ms. Annalena Baerbock, MP and Chairwoman of Germany’s Green Party, to discuss the situation of IDPs and refugees in Kurdistan Region and the latest political developments.
Ms. Baerbock was accompanied by Barbara Schumacher, the German Consulate’s Consul for Political, Economic and Humanitarian Affairs,
The leader of Germany’s Green Party said that she is visiting Kurdistan Region to see the refugee and IDP camps in Duhok Governorate, and to understand the political, financial and social situation facing refugees and IDPs.
Dr. Fareed outlined the role of the Kurdistan Parliament and the percentage of women in the governing institutions in Kurdistan Region They also discussed Kurdistan’s government formation process, bilateral relations, and the importance of strengthening coordination between the KRG and the Iraqi federal government .
The Speaker described the violence and discrimination against people in Kurdistani areas outside the KRG administrative area, and said that the Iraqi Parliament and Iraqi government must take action. A bill has been drafted on the Yazidis and the rights of victims of terrorism, she said.
The delegation said that the important role and high number of women in the Kurdistan Parliament was commendable, they said, “The legal minimum quota of women MPs is very good, even Germany has not achieved this percentage.”
Dr. Fareed and the German delegation agreed that building on the strong relationship between the Kurdistan Parliament and the Bundestag is very important.
