Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Fareed welcomes German delegation from the city of Essen
17th June 2019 - Dr. Vala Fareed, Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament, welcomed Mr. Peter Renzen, Alderman of Essen city council, several officials from Essen's hospitals and social services, and the head of the political department of Funke Media Group from Berlin.
The German delegation briefed Dr. Fareed on their work in Duhok Governorate to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs). They said that they wish to widen their area of work to other governorates, and to strengthen coordination between the city of Essen and Kurdistan Region.
The Speaker welcomed Mr. Renzen and his delegation and thanked them for their important work in Duhok Governorate. The Speaker added, “Although Kurdistan Region has overcome the crisis, we still host a huge number of IDPs and refugees.”
On the crimes committed against the Yazidis, Dr. Fareed stated, “In the current term of Parliament and also in the previous fourth term, we have asked the Iraqi federal government to take measures so that the crimes be recognized as genocide by the international court.”
Dr. Fareed gave an overview of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) relations with the Iraqi federal government, and said that at the Kurdistan Parliament’s first sitting of the current fifth term, MPs insisted on closer cooperation between the Iraqi federal government and the KRG. Dr. Fareed discussed the problems and violence that people face in the Kurdistani areas outside the KRG administrative area.
On the political situation in the Kurdistan Region, Dr. Fareed said “We have carried out the procedural and legislative steps to form the government, and we hope that the cabinet will be formed by the deadline.” The new Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region has 30 days to form his cabinet.
