Agriculture & Irrigation Committee meets farmers in areas at risk of ISIS attacks

Parliament’s Agriculture and Irrigation Committee on 12th May met pro-bono lawyers working on the case of farmers in Qaraj, Kandenawa, and Makhmur.

At the meeting, chaired by the committee’s head Mr. Osman Ali Smail (KIG), they discussed the threat of ISIS attacks in the area, and the lawyers submitted a formal note to parliament of the farmers’ concerns and demands. Their note highlighted that the absence of Peshmerga forces in the area is raising the risk of threats and attacks by ISIS.

Mr. Smail said that committee members will visit the area to further look into the challenges facing the farmers. He suggested that the Presidency of Kurdistan Parliament form a special committee to discuss with the Iraqi Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Trade the concerns of the farmers in the areas at risk.
