Kurdistan Region’s High Council on Women's Affairs asks for legislation to support its work

The Parliament Committee on Social Affairs, Protection of Women's Rights, and Human Rights on Monday met the Kurdistan Region’s High Council for Women’s Affairs.

The High Council on Women’s Affairs asked the parliamentary committee for legislation to govern it as an institution and support its functions. Mrs. Pakhshan Zangana, the Head of the High Council, said that the council faced many challenges in undertaking its work because of the lack of legislation to support it as an institution. She suggested mechanisms to develop the council so that it could carry out its responsibilities within a better legal framework.

The parliamentary committee and the high council also discussed the children of Yazidi women born through abduction, rape and sexual slavery by ISIS terrorists. The high council said that a means should be found to give the children identity and citizenship, so that they can integrate into society.

The meeting was chaired by Gulistan Saeed (Change Movement), Deputy Head of the Parliament Committee.
