Speaker Dr. Vala Farid and Norway’s Foreign Ministry Official Mr. Knut Lein discuss Norway conference on Yazidi Genocide

5nd May 2019  – Parliament Speaker Dr. Vala Farid on 2nd May met a delegation from the Foreign Ministry of Norway, led by the ministry’s Special Representative Mr. Knut Lein, and Ms. Tone Allers, Norway’s Ambassador to Jordan and Iraq.  Mr. Lein informed the Speaker that Norway aims to hold a conference regarding the Genocide against the Yazidi people.

Dr. Farid welcomed Norway’s plan to host a conference on the Yazidi Genocide, and said that is important for the Kurdistan Parliament to participate, share its experience and be involved in decisions. The Kurdistan Parliament has officially recognized the Genocide.

Mr. Lein congratulated Dr. Farid on her election to the Speakership, and said that he was happy that a women took the leadership position. He discussed Norway’s cooperation with the Kurdistan Regional Government to support refugees and IDPs, and thanked the Peshmerga forces for their bravery in fighting ISIS.

Dr. Farid thanked Norway for supporting Kurdistan’s humanitarian aid to those who have escaped war and found safety and shelter in Kurdistan.  She briefed the delegation on the Kurdistan Parliament’s recent legislative business and said that the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet will be formed soon, since the main political parties are very close to reaching consensus.

The KRG and the Iraqi Federal Government have improved relations, the Speaker said, and she asked that Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution be implemented, as the only sustainable solution for the disputed territories.
