Deputy Speaker Hawrami chairs workshop on Kurdish Diaspora Bill

The Kurdistan Parliament’s Relations and Kurdish Diaspora Committee on 17 November organized a workshop chaired by Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami to brainstorm on a Kurdish Diaspora bill.

University professors, representatives of civil society organizations, political parties, academics, specialists and representatives of Kurdistan’s ethnic and religious components participated in the workshop.

Mr. Hawrami pointed to the importance of such workshops in preparing a bill (draft law) on the Kurdish Diaspora, and said that coordination between the Kurdistan Parliament and the Kurdsitan Regional Government is needed on drafting legislation.

Dr. Rebwar Babkayi, chair of Parliament’s Relations and Kurdish Diaspora Committee, briefed the participants about the problems facing the Kurdish community abroad and when they return, and how to secure and protect their rights.

The workshop participants discussed the articles and details of the bill, and the committee decided to hold a special meeting to add participants’ suggestions to the bill.

The workshop was the start of the drafting of the bill, and the committee plans to go abroad to meet with members of the Kurdistani community to get their suggestions and views for the bill.
