Deputy Speaker Hawrami meets with Institute for International Law and Human Rights

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami on 7 November met with the Institute for International Law and Human Rights, a legislation capacity-building consultancy based in the US.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami briefed Mr. William Spencer, Executive Director for the Institute for International Law and Human Rights (IILHR) and his colleague Mr. Najm Al Khaffaji, on Parliament’s priorities: to support the government’s reform and public services agenda through the passage of appropriate legislation and a reform package.

Mr. Hawrami said that another priority for Parliament is to draft a Kurdistan Constitution in this four-year term. Parliament’s Presidency has met with all the political forces to get them behind the drafting through cooperation.

Mr. Spencer said that IILHR has provided legislative advice in Iraq since the drafting of the Iraqi Constitution of 2005, and has worked with the committees of the Iraqi Council of Representatives for several years. The IILHR receives funding for its work in Iraq from governments abroad.
