Speaker Rewas Faiq meets with Institute for International Law and Human Rights

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq on 11 November met with the Institute for International Law and Human Rights, a legislation capacity-building consultancy based in the US. They discussed support for the process of drafting legislation, and for Parliament's administration.

Speaker Faiq briefed Mr. William Spencer, Executive Director for the Institute for International Law and Human Rights (IILHR), on Kurdistan Parliament’s previous work and current priorities. She said that she wants the Kurdistan Region to have a body of legislation by benefiting from Iraq’s laws, in accordance with Article 110 of the Iraqi Constitution.

In this term, Parliament’s Presidency wants a Kurdistan Constitution to be drafted, based on a national consensus between all the political parties, she said.

One of Parliament’s current tasks is to digitize all the laws and resolutions passed by the Kurdistan Parliament, so that researchers and professionals can access them easily. Speaker Faiq said hoped that the IILHR can support Parliament in this task.

The Speaker said that another priority for the Parliament is to pass key laws on education, health insurance, social security, agricultural insurance, protection of domestic products, and anti-smuggling.

Parliament has been debating and has already passed some laws that directly affect people’s lives, such as the recently passed Law on registering illegally used municipal land, Speaker Faiq said. This law helps the many thousands of people on low incomes who built their homes illegally on municipal land, by allowing them to purchase the land and register it officially.

Mr. Spencer said that the IILHR is ready to give every possible support to the Kurdistan Parliament.
