Committee on Kurdistani Areas and specialist lawyer discuss challenging Iraq’s provincial councils law

The Committee on Kurdistani Areas outside the KRG Administrative Area met with Mr. Sardar Sabah Harki, a lawyer and expert in constitutional issues. The committee members on 4 September discussed with Mr. Harki how to challenge the Iraqi Provincial Election law at the Iraqi Federal Court.

Some articles of the law, which was passed by Iraq’s Council of Representatives (parliament), violate the rights of Kurdish IDP voters who are from areas outside the KRG administrative area, especially Kurds from Kirkuk and Nineveh, and have been forced from their homes due to conflict and insecurity. The law prevents IDPs from voting outside their provinces, in effect preventing them from electing their own province’s council.
