In Baghdad Deputy Speaker Hawrami and MPs meet UNSG Special Representative Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami and MPs on 4 September in Baghdad met with Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative and Head of UNAMI.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami and the cross-party group of Kurdistan Parliament MPs raised the Kurdistan Region’s concerns regarding Iraq's financial management law, a civil service bill, and Article 16 of the Iraq provincial elections bill, which violates the rights of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians by preventing IDPS from voting anywhere except their home towns.

Mr. Hawrami said that these items of legislation are attempts by the Iraqi Parliament's to violate Kurdistan's constitutional rights, as well as the right of IDPs to vote.

The delegation also discussed with Ms. Hennis-Plasschaert the adverse political and security situation in Kirkuk.

Special Representative Hennis-Plasschaert said that UNAMI takes the Kurdistan Region’s concerns seriously and will do their best to help resolve problems between Erbil and Baghdad.
