Kurdistani MPs of Iraqi Parliament and Kurdistan Parliament to coordinate on Iraqi legislation that affects Kurdistan

On 8 September Kurdistan Parliament’s Presidency and MPs met with Kurdistani MPs of Iraq’s Council of Representatives (ICR), to discuss how to coordinate on Iraqi legislation that affects the people of Kurdistan and the KRG.

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq, Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami, Secretary Muna Kahveci, and MPs from different parties met with Kurdistani MPs of Iraq’s Council of Representatives (ICR), headed by Dr. Bashir Khalil Haddad, Second Deputy Speaker of the ICR.

They had detailed discussions about detrimental and unconstitutional legislation in the ICR that violates people’s rights or undermines and reduces the authority of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Some of them have been passed and some are still bills.

Speaker Faiq said, “From now on there must be efforts to prevent the passage of such laws. However, some of those laws have been passed and there will be legal action at the Federal Court.”

Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami said to the ICR MPs, “The Kurdistan Parliament is ready to provide every assistance to your legislative work.”

The MPs of both parliaments each gave their opinions and suggestions to Dr. Faiq and Dr. Haddad. They decided to form several joint committees between the two parliaments, and for Kurdistan Parliament’s committees to visit their corresponding committees in the ICR, share expertise and hold joint meetings at the start of every parliamentary season.
