Kurdistan Parliament conveys best wishes on 122nd anniversary of Kurdish journalism

The Kurdistan Parliament on 22 April congratulated journalists on the 122nd anniversary of the birth of Kurdish journalism, and on the 22nd anniversary of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate.

Speaker Rewas Faiq wrote that she supports honest writers who seek the truth, defend people’s rights and freedoms, and demand our nation’s rights.

She called on Kurdistan’s courts to be independent in implementing media laws and to protect the lives and dignity of journalists. She added that all journalists should have equal opportunities.

Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami sent his best wishes on the 122nd anniversary of the first issue of the first Kurdish newspaper, called Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Parliament’s passage of Law no. 35 of 2007 on Journalism was an important step in expanding and developing the media.

Parliament’s Culture, Civil Society, Sports and Youth Committee thanked the Bederkhan family, who wrote and published the first Kurdish newspaper, for their noble role in Kurdistan’s political and national development. The two brothers of the Bederkhan family were the spark for Kurdish journalism, the committee noted.
