Parliament Presidency's statement on Kurdistan Flag Day

On the day that we celebrate our beloved flag of Kurdistan, we congratulate all the people of Kurdistan and the followers of the way of our flag. Our flag is a symbol of sacrifice and everlasting prosperity. To keep our flag flying high we must not be discouraged by any sacrifice.

To enshrine appreciation, adherence and love for the Kurdistan flag, the Kurdistan Parliament decided on June 19, 2004, to designate 17 December as annual Flag Day, so that the children and future generations of Kurdistan never forget to fly the flag high with pride.

The flag of Kurdistan is a symbol of the Kurdistan Regional entity and is recognized in Iraq’s permanent Constitution. It is the legacy of the efforts, struggles and sacrifices of the people of Kurdistan, and does not belong to any individual, party or ideology. Protecting this constitutional entity must be a priority for all parties.

On Flag Day, we stress that Kurdistan needs internal harmony, the spirit of brotherhood, understanding, forgiveness, and coexistence within the framework of democratic ideals, because we are all in the same boat.

Hatred and violence provide pretexts to delay the radical reforms that Kurdistan needs and inject chaos into the situation, so that the countless sacrifices made and lives lost by martyrs in the Anfal, chemical weapons attacks and other crimes would all be for nothing.

On this day, we also give our best wishes to mothers of Kurdistan on Mother’s Day, we honour the mothers of the martyrs, and we hope that our mothers will raise their children to be patriots, to love their homeland and to protect their rights and freedom.
