Kurdistan Region delegation participates in Munich Security Conference

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami accompanied KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and his delegation at the 2020 Munich Security Conference, where they met heads of government and other senior politicians.

On their first day of meetings on 14 February, the Kurdistan Region delegation met with Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and discussed bilateral relations and the situation in Kurdistan and the region.

Prime Minister Barzani and US Energy Secretary Dan Brouilette discussed developing bilateral relations in areas of mutual interest, particularly energy.

The delegation also met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and they agreed on the importance of cooperation on the economy and in the fight against terror.

The delegation and Iraq’s Minister of Defense Najah Al Shammari discussed the changes and events in Iraq and the region. Both sides emphasized strengthening Iraq’s security and forming the new Iraqi cabinet quickly. The Kurdistan delegation insisted that the new government have the support of the majority of Iraqis.

The Kurdistan Region delegation also met with Germany’s Minister of Defence Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and focused on developing bilateral relations. The Kurdish delegation thanked the German government for supporting the Peshmerga forces and they agreed on the threat that ISIS poses to world security. The German side emphasized that they will continue to support and train the Peshmerga forces.

The Kurdistan Region officials will have meetings at the MSC until 16 February.
