Parliament passes Law on Management and Protection of Archeology and Heritage in Kurdistan Region

The Kurdistan Parliament on 28 April passed the Law on Management and Protection of Archeology and Heritage in Kurdistan Region, and held the first reading of amendments to the implementation of the Law on Management of Endowments.

The sitting was presided over by Speaker Rewaz Faiq, with Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami and Secretary Muna Kahveci alongside her.

The legislative, municipalities and culture committees had worked on the bill on archeology. All the articles individually, the bill’s purpose and its entirety were put to voting. The bill passed with 74 MPs’ votes.

The Law on Management and Protection of Archeology and Heritage in Kurdistan Region comprises 34 articles and aims to manage and protect archeological and historical sites, artefacts and heritage, and to prevent their trade, destruction and transfer, so that such sites, artefacts, national resources, cultural and scientific heritage, and mankind’s and the people of Kurdistan’s civilizational identity are protected.

The Legislative Committee then held the first reading of the Bill on Amendments to the Implementation of the Law on Management of Endowments, Law No. 64 of 1966. Speaker Faiq asked the legislative and religious affairs and endowments committees to prepare the bill for its second reading at a future sitting.
