Statement by Committee on Protection of Women's Rights regarding murders of women
Tragically for some time there has been more news of the killings of girls and women in Kurdistan, and the statistics on these crimes are deeply concerning. We condemn the killing of women under any pretext or for any reason.
Recently an innocent young woman was killed by her husband, and such crimes continue to be perpetrated because of the mentality of the murderers and the utter disregard for women's rights.
We are carefully investigating and monitoring these crimes and are working on strengthening legislation on punishment of the criminals in such cases. We also support the steps taken by the executive and judicial authorities to impose tough sentences on the criminals and perpetrators of these crimes.
We are focusing our efforts on passing a new law on combating violence against women, in which the punishment in cases of murdering women are much tougher and will become a deterrent that will help to eliminate these barbaric crimes.
To this end, it is very important that the three powers of the legislature, the executive and the judiciary coordinate fully on the next steps, each according to their authority and responsibilities, to prevent such crimes and to use rule the law to punish them.
In all these cases, the government must implement its powers to prosecute those who commit murder and prevent tribal reconciliation from influencing cases.
All the relevant authorities need to fulfill their responsibility in education, culture and community rehabilitation, to end this mentality that creates murderers.
