Presidency of Kurdistan Parliament's statement on 7-year commemoration of genocide against Yazidis
On August 3rd, 2014, a grim and tragic day in the history of the people of Kurdistan, ISIS terrorists launched a brutal attack on Shengal (Sinjar) district and abducted Yazidi Kurdish girls and women, and buried Yazidi men and boys alive.
As we remember that black day, we thank the Peshmerga forces for their patience and sacrifices and our allies who did not allow ISIS terrorists to advance further and enter deep into Kurdistan, thereby destroying the myth of ISIS’s invincibility.
At extraordinary sitting number 3 of 3rd August 2019, the Kurdistan Parliament in a resolution officially designated August 3rd as the day of the Yazidi genocide to pave the way for compensation for the victims of this brutal crime and for the people of Shengal; asked the Iraqi government to fulfill its legal and moral duty to the survivors; called on international organizations and the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/Islamic State (UNITAD) to document the crimes and to prosecute the perpetrators in international courts; and to make reparations to the survivors and identify all the crimes committed against the people of Kurdistan as genocide.
We pay our respects to the martyrs of Shengal and the victims of the Shengal genocide, and we ask that efforts continue to find the missing and abducted, and to help the people of Shengal to return to the land of their ancestors.
