Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami meets with Dr. Muna Yukhna Yaqu, Head of Kurdistan Independent Human Rights Commission

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 19 December 2021 met with Dr. Muna Yukhna Yaqu, the Head of the Kurdistan Region Independent Human Rights Commission (IHRC).

Deputy Speaker Hawrami emphasized the need to strengthen Kurdistan Region’s commissions and institutions. He said that Parliament’s relevant standing committees are ready to work with the IHRC, and suggested that the IHRC give its views and recommendations to Parliaments committees on legislative proposals and bills that address human rights issues, so that Parliament can benefit from the Commission’s views to improve the bills.

Dr. Yaqu gave an overview of the IHRC’s work in the past and their future plans. She said that in order for the Commission to make good progress, the Law on the Independent Human Rights Commission in Kurdistan Region – Iraq (Law No. 4 of 2010) should be amended to facilitate some of the administrative aspects.

Dr. Yaqu was accompanied by several of the Commission’s advisers and general managers.
