Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami’s statement regarding flash floods in Erbil Governorate
Unfortunately we are suffering the effects of global climate change and the resulting extreme rainfall patterns. Tragically several people lost their lives, and homes and belongings were damaged in recent floods in Erbil Governorate, caused by very heavy rain and thunderstorms.
I extend my condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. My thoughts are with them at this sad time.
At such times when natural disasters cause loss of life and destroy citizens’ homes, we should all be responsible for trying to alleviate the grief of the victims' families. No one should use natural disasters to score political points. Together with the relevant authorities, we should all investigate the situation on the ground and take urgent steps to ensure that people get assistance and support, to clean up and restore damaged areas, and to ensure compensation for those who have suffered damages and losses.
Kurdistan Parliament’s standing committees will continue to follow up on and work with the ministries and other relevant authorities on taking the necessary measures and on increasing preparedness for natural disasters.
May God protect Kurdistan and our people.
Dr. Hemin Hawrami
Deputy Speaker of Kurdistan Parliament
