Deputy Speaker Hawrami and MPs meet with KRG Labour and Social Affairs Minister Kwestan Muhammad
As part of a series of recent visits to institutions to monitor the government’s work, Kurdistan Parliament’s Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 14 February led MPs in a meeting with KRG Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Kwestan Muhammad and her colleagues at the ministry.
MPs from the Parliament committees on Social Affairs and Protection of Human Rights, and Protection of Women’s Rights, took part in the meeting.
On behalf of Parliament’s Presidency, Dr. Hawrami thanked Minister Kwestan and her colleagues for their cooperation with Parliament’s committees. He said that Parliament places great importance on the ministry’s implementation of the Reform Law and of the KRG cabinet’s 2019 manifesto, reducing bureaucracy, comprehensive reform of administration and finance, and delegation of powers. He also said that Parliament’s committees and the ministry should work together on amending or drafting legislation related to labour, social affairs and women’s rights.
Minister Kwestan Muhammad gave an overview of the ministry's work, their measures to implement the Reform Law and plans for this year, which have been hampered by the financial crisis and the Coronavirus pandemic.
"There are some laws that should be amended and some new legislative proposals being prepared with relevant parties, and some have been sent to the KRG Council of Ministers”, she said. She referred to a proposal on foster care and foster parenting.
The MPs asked questions about workers, persons with disabilities, prisons, social work and many other areas of the the ministry's responsibilities.
