Kurdistan Parliament pays last respects to former speaker Dr. Rozh Nuri Shawes

The Kurdistan Parliament on 15 February held a funeral ceremony for the late Dr. Rozh Nuri Shawes, a former speaker of the parliament, member of the KDP political bureau and veteran Peshmerga who held leading positions in government in Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

The Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami led the proceedings, accompanied by Vice President of Kurdistan Region Ja’afar Sheikh Mustafa, KRG Interior Minister Raber Ahmad, Parliament Secretary Muni Kahveci, the family and relatives of Dr. Rozh Nuri Shawes, several KRG ministers, MPs and Parliament staff.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami said, “This is a very sad day for us in the Kurdistan Parliament, that we must bid farewell to the brave and skilled Peshmerga and long-serving politician.”  

He referred to Dr. Rozh’s role in helping to liberate the people of Kurdistan as a Peshmerga and in his positions as a statesman of Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Dr. Hawrami said, “Under Dr. Rozh’s leadership as Speaker, the Kurdistan Parliament passed many laws important to the establishment of Kurdistan’s institutions. Seventy-two important laws and resolutions were passed.”

He continued, “Dr. Rozh held an important place in protecting Kurdistan Region's territorial integrity and defending Kurdistan’s sovereignty. He was brave and accomplished both in war and in politics, and in helping to achieve peace between Kurdistan’s main political forces.”

On behalf of the Presidency of Kurdistan Parliament, Deputy Speaker Hawrami expressed his condolences to Dr. Rozh’s family, President Masoud Barzani and the KDP’s political bureau and members.
