Speaker Rewaz Faiq welcomes Heartland Alliance International’s Iraq director Salah Sadiq

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 8 February welcomed Mr. Salah Sadiq, Director of the Iraq program of the humanitarian NGO Heartland Alliance International.

They discussed human rights in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and the laws that relate to human rights, including anti-terrorism, freedom of information, anti-trafficking, organ donation and transplant laws.

Dr. Faiq stated, "It is the duty of all constitutional institutions of Kurdistan Region to protecting human rights and confront violence. The pressure that international humanitarian organizations can bring to bear on governments worldwide to protect human rights is also essential. We think that the separation of powers is one of the most important principles of government, but at the same time we must also work with each other and flag up each other’s shortcomings in any area, especially on human rights.

The Speaker added, “For any law that MPs or committees want to review or amend and that Parliament’s Legislative Committee supports for putting on Parliament’s agenda, we will follow the legislative procedures to work on it."

Mr. Sadiq supported Dr. Faiq’s views and they agreed that Heartland Alliance will work with Parliament in the future through Parliament’s research center on some projects.
