A summary of Kurdistan Parliament’s committees’ recent meetings and activities:
Relations and Kurdish Diaspora Committee
13 January - The committee, led by the chair Dr. Rebwar Babkayi, held their usual meeting online.
The committee discussed a report submitted by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Representations abroad about their activities, responsibilities and challenges that they face in their work. The KRG has representatives in several countries in Europe, the US, the Middle East and elsewhere.
The MPs gave their comments and views on the report including its shortcomings, and they decided to give their feedback to the KRG Department of Foreign Relations (DFR) in writing.
Social affairs and Protection of Human Rights Committee
17 January – The committee, led by the chair Romeo Hakari (National Union Coalition), visited the head of the public prosecution service, to raise the problems facing prison inmates and detainees.
The MPs raised to the public prosecution service the prisoners’ and detainees’ demands and problems, which the committee had heard first-hand in their visits to the directorates for prisons, arrests, detentions and transfers.
The head of the public prosecution service and several judges at the meeting discussed the issues in detail to find suitable mechanisms for solving them.
The committee and the public prosecution service agreed that such scrutiny and coordination is important to solve issues within the current laws in force.
