Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami welcomes Head of European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq on civilian security
Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 4 July welcomed Christoph Buik, Head of the European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM), and his colleagues Simone Karlstetter and Stephan Langelott.
Deputy Speaker Hawrami and Mr. Buik discussed how the EUAM, which advises on the civilian security sector such as the police, can support Kurdistan Region.
Dr. Hawrami said that the Kurdistan Parliament would appreciate initiatives to strengthen Kurdistan’s civilian security forces.
He added that Parliament’s Interior, Municipalities and Local Councils Committee is responsible for scrutinizing the KRG’s policies and actions on civilian security services including the police and government guards.
The Deputy Speaker briefed Mr. Buik and his colleagues on Parliament’s passage of the Reform Law last year, which also includes provisions on reform of internal security forces and guards. He said that Parliament would welcome the EUAM’s support for the reform process.
He added that the EU and the member states have a very important role and presence in Kurdistan Region.
Mr. Buik commended Kurdistan Region’s good security situation and said that the mission looks forward to working with the Kurdistan Region’s authorities to strengthen it further.
