Deputy Speaker Hawrami meets with Heartland Alliance International

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami on 16 June met with Sarita Sandosham, Executive Director of the NGO Heartland Alliance International, and her colleagues. They discussed Heartland Alliance’s support for Kurdistan Parliament’s legislative work.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami said, “We appreciate support and capacity-building for the legislation process in the Kurdistan Parliament.”

Ms. Sandosham said that Heartland Alliance, which has held workshops and worked with Parliament's standing committees, is grateful for its partnership with Parliament on some areas of legislation.

Among the priorities for this current fifth term of Parliament, Dr. Hawrami said, are drafting the Kurdistan Constitution, the Bill on the Special Court for Crimes by ISIS, and the anticipated Kurdistan Region Budget Bill.

He explained the international elements of the Special Court for the Crimes committed by ISIS that need the support of the international community.

Heartland Alliance gave an overview of their work in Kurdistan Region and Iraq, which includes a task force on human rights to strengthen the implementation of human rights-related legislation by the authorities and the judiciary.
