Deputy Speaker Hawrami meets with Institute for International Law and Human Rights

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 14 June met with the Institute for International Law and Human Rights (IILHR), a non-profit legal consultancy, to discuss its advisory work with Parliament’s standing committees.

Dr. Hawrami met with the executive director William Spencer, head of the team Robin L. Ghazi, and director of the Iraqi office Najm al-Khafaji.

They discussed the draft legislation and bills that have an international law dimension, and how Parliament’s standing committees can work with the IILHR on these bills.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami talked about the steps that the Kurdistan Parliament has taken to pave the way for drafting the Kurdistan Constitution, and the stage that the drafting reached in previous attempts.

Dr. Hawrami emphasized that the Kurdistan Parliament firmly believes that the Kurdistan Region has the right to have its own Constitution.

The Deputy Speaker and the IILHR representatives exchanged views on the bills and other legislative proposals that are in passage and some that have had their first readings. The IILHR expressed their readiness for more cooperation with the standing committees.

The IILHR has advised Parliament’s Social Affairs and Protection of Women’s Rights committees.
