Speaker Rewaz Faiq discusses Bill on Special Court for Crimes by ISIS with Russia’s Consul General Oleg Levin
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 15 June met with Russia’s Consul General Oleg Levin to discuss the Bill to Establish the Special Court for Crimes by ISIS.
MPs Dr. Bizhar Kochar (KDP), Chair of the Legislative Committee; Rozhan Muhammad Karim (PUK), member of the Legislative Committee; and Balen Ismail (Change), member of the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee, participated in the meeting.
Dr. Faiq explained the bill and its security, financial and international legal aspects, and the challenges that these aspects present for the Kurdistan Parliament in considering this bill.
Speaker Faiq said, "The Bill to Establish the Special Court in Kurdistan Region – Iraq for Crimes by ISIS has many international legal aspects. Parliament is at the stage of consultation with lawmakers, advisers and experts in this field.
She continued, “One of the key consultations and steps for the Kurdistan Parliament is to understand the views of our international allies on this Bill, and it is vital that this legislation does not contradict the Iraqi Constitution and international laws. We need to understand the level of cooperation with us in terms of the international community’s constitutional, legal, financial and security support for such a court.”
Consul General Levin thanked Speaker Faiq for the meeting and said that this is a new issue that needs more time to consider all its aspects.
