Speaker Rewaz Faiq meets with Françoise Dumas, Head of French National Assembly's Defence Committee
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 25 May welcomed Françoise Dumas, the French National Assembly’s Head of the Defence and Armed Forces Committee, and her delegation. They discussed the importance of France's support for the Peshmerga to prevent the reemergence of ISIS.
Speaker Faiq expressed her gratitude to France for their support for Kurdistan Region in the war against ISIS. Dr. Faiq said, "France has always played a key role, supporting the Kurdistan Region in Iraq since the post-March 1991 Kurdish Uprising. In particular Madame Mitterrand, who remains in our hearts and memories, played a key role.
She added, “Since the start of the terrorist attacks by ISIS, France’s forces have provided considerable military and logistical support for our Peshmerga forces, and France views the Peshmerga as an important and key ally."
Dr. Faiq asked France for continued support for the Peshmerga forces, because that support and cooperation has been vital and decisive in helping to defeat ISIS.
Speaker Faiq and President Dumas discussed the next Iraqi parliamentary election, the situation for young people in the Kurdistan Region and recent developments.
President Dumas pledged that France’s forces will continue to cooperate with and support the Peshmerga forces, and she wished Speaker Faiq continued success in her duties.
France’s Consul General in Kurdistan, Olivier Decottignies, commended Speaker Faiq for championing rights and freedoms in Kurdistan Region.
Ms. Dumas was accompanied by France’s Ambassador to Iraq Bruno Aubert, Consul General Decottignies and several aides.
