Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq meets with Islamic scholars led by Dr. Saeed Ahmad Penjweni
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 17 August 2022 welcomed Islamic scholars, led by Dr. Saeed Ahmad Penjweni, who expressed their concern about rumours of Islamic studies being removed from the school curriculum.
The clerics presented to Speaker Faiq a letter from religious scholars expressing their concern that there is talk of removing Islamic studies from the school curriculum.
The letter was signed by 3,890 university and school Arabic language teachers as well as religious studies teachers in the Kurdistan Region, calling for the position of Islam and Islamic education in the curriculum to remain exactly as it is.
Speaker Faiq said, “The Kurdistan Parliament respects the principles of Islam, as the religion of the majority of the people.”
Dr. Faiq assured the Islamic scholars that Parliament’s committees care about this issue, and that the Education Committee’s report will be drafted in coordination with the relevant KRG authorities so that it is acceptable to the people of Kurdistan, as fundamentally no one has any wish or intention to the contrary.
