Speaker Dr. Rewaz  Faiq welcomes UK Consul General Mr. David Hunt

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz  Faiq on 24 August 2022 welcomed Mr. David Hunt, the UK’s Consul General in Kurdistan Region. They discussed the current political situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and the challenges facing the political process in Iraq.

Speaker Faiq highlighted many critical and sensitive points about the current political deadlock in Iraq, and the possibility that the current instability and deterioration could lead to thousands of people coming to Kurdistan Region.

They also discussed the dialogue between the political parties on how to hold the next Kurdistan Parliament election.

Speaker Faiq said, "Compromise and finding common ground are the best way for the parties to reach a political agreement on the mechanism for holding the next election in Kurdistan. Everyone should look at the future with a sense of responsibility, in the service of the nation. If any side is unwilling to compromise on some of their interests, if we fail to reach an agreement and remain in suspense, whatever the outcome we will all suffer.”

Consul General Hunt thanked Speaker Faiq for her realistic assessment of the political situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He stressed that peace and stability and strengthening the foundations of democracy are of great importance to the UK.

The British Consul General added that the UK is closely monitoring the overall political situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, especially the upcoming parliamentary election.
