Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq chairs meeting on two animal protection legislative proposals

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 19 June 2022 met with animal rights organizations and activists to discuss two legislative proposals on the protection of animals.

The legislative proposals were signed by several MPs and approved by the KRG Council of Ministers

Speaker Faiq said, "This law would be one of the best laws to protect Kurdistan’s environment. It would also regulate how people can treat animals and trade in them."

Dr. Faiq added, "The increase in stray animals on streets and in public areas can put people at risk and raises health concerns, the animals are very vulnerable and often are killed and injured by traffic, it is extremely sad and painful to see this happening all the time.”

The heads of the shelters for stray animals, vets and animal rights activists made suggestions about the legislative proposals to strengthen them.

The participants decided to incorporate the suggestions into the draft legislation and also to consult with other experts, so that it will be ready for its reading at a Parliament sitting.
