Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq welcomes European Union Ambassador to Iraq Ville Varjola

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 15 March 2022 welcomed the European Union's Ambassador to Iraq Ville Varjola. They discussed the latest political developments, the Iraqi government formation process, disagreements between Iraq’s political forces, and the next Kurdistan Parliament election.

Speaker Faiq explained the parliamentary parties’ different views on the mechanisms for holding the next Kurdistan Parliament election, including the Election Law and the mandate of the Election Commission.

On the political process in both Iraq and Kurdistan Region, Dr. Faiq stressed that dialogue is the vital to overcoming disagreements.

On freedom of expression and the independence of the judiciary in the Kurdistan Region, Speaker Faiq emphasized that freedom of expression and public freedoms are key principles of human rights and democracy in the Kurdistan Region, and Kurdistan’s courts and institutions must follow these principles that are the people’s legal and constitutional rights.
