Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami welcomes Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 23 May 2022 welcomed the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate, led by their head Mr. Azad Hamamin, deputy Mr. Bazhar Hakim, and secretary Mr. Handren Ahmad.

They discussed the legal framework that regulates the media in Kurdistan Region. The Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate referred to the recommendations that were made at a major journalism conference in Erbil [in 2019], with the participation of the International Federation of Journalists, on amending the legal and regulatory framework to better protect media freedom, ensure professional  journalism, and at the same time protect the rights of individuals and society.

Deptuty Speaker Hawrami said that the Kurdistan Parliament is ready to work on existing legislation that relates to freedom of journalists as well as to draft new laws, through collaboration between the relevant standing committees, the Journalists Syndicate, Parliament’s Research Centre and journalism experts.

Dr. Hawrami and the Journalists Syndicate agreed that any amendments to legislation should not undermine freedom of the press.
