Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq welcomes European Parliament's Defence and Security Subcommittee
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 25 May 2022 welcomed members of the European Parliament’s Security and Defence Subcommittee, led by the chair Ms. Nathalie Loiseau. They discussed the political and security situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Speaker Faiq gave an overview of the current situation in the Kurdistan Region, Erbil-Baghdad relations, the security situation and the threats from ISIS in the Kurdistani areas outside the KRG administrative area, violations of Iraq's territorial sovreignty, women's rights and freedom of speech.
Speaker Faiq highlighted issues related to human rights, standards of living and education, freedom of speech, and the rights of the ethnic and religious communities in Kurdistan Region.
Dr. Faiq said, "The Kurdistan Parliament has been facing many challenges to the next parliament election, the Election Law, reactivating the Kurdistan Electoral Commission and voter registration, but fortunately the situation is now calming down and the political parties are making progress towards reaching an agreement."
Ms. Marie Paret the Head of the EU Liaison Office in Erbil, Ms. Anne Meskanen the head of the EU Advisory Mission in Iraq, and Mr. Delavar Ajgeiy the KRG Representative in Brussels, participated in the meeting.
