Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq meets with French Senator Christian Cambon, Chair of Foreign Relations and Defense Committee
Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 2 October 2022 met with Senator Christian Cambon, the Chair of the French Senate’s Foreign Relations, Defense and Armed Forces Committee.
In the meeting attended by France’s Consul General Olivier Decottignies and the KRG Representative to France Ali Dolamari, parliamentary work, civil liberties, human rights and peaceful coexistence between different religious and ethnic communities in the Kurdistan Region were discussed.
Senator Cambon said that one purpose of his visit is to develop closer parliamentary relations and cooperation, and to exchange knowledge and expertise between their two legislatures’ standing committees.
Speaker Faiq said, “Our people are proud of our historic relations with the people and Government of France, through good times and bad, especially Madame Mitterrand’s support for us after the Uprising [of 1991], it was a shining moment in our history that the people will never forget.”
The Parliament Speaker also commended the Government of France for its assistance to the Kurdistan Region against ISIS terrorists.
Dr. Faiq gave an overview of the state of civil liberties, women's rights, other human rights issues, and intercommunal peaceful coexistence.
Senator Cambon commended the Speaker for her role and said, “They are closely monitoring the Speaker’s efforts to defend freedom of the press and women's rights and to protect the rights of the [religious and ethnic] communities.”
Senator Cambon honoured Speaker Faiq by presenting her with the medal of the French Senate.
