Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq meets with EU Ambassador to Iraq Ville Varjola

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 7 September 2022 welcomed Ambassador Ville Varjola, the European Union's envoy to Iraq, and Anders Wiberg, the EU's incoming Head of the EU Assistance Mission in Iraq for civilian security sector reform.

They discussed the political situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and the challenges facing the political process in Iraq in general, as well as the latest political developments in Kurdistan Region and the dialogue between the political parties on conducting the next Kurdistan Parliament election.

Ambassador Varjola said, “Elections should be held as soon as possible, and the Kurdistan Region should take the lead in protecting human rights and civil liberties."

They exchanged views on the protection of human rights and civil liberties in the Kurdistan Region.

Reforms at Kurdistan Region's governmental institutions was another important topic of the meeting.

Speaker Faiq thanked the EU for providing assistance in reforming the security and police sector in the Kurdistan Region, and called on the EU Delegation to Iraq to support the development of Kurdistan Region’s institutions and monitor the protection of rights and civil liberties.
