Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami welcomes Germany’s new Consul General Mr. Klaus Dieter Streicher

Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 19 February 2023 welcomed Germany’s new Consul General in Kurdistan Region, Mr. Klaus Dieter Streicher. They discussed political developments, Erbil-Baghdad talks, the next Kurdistan Parliament election, and bilateral relations.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami wished Consul General Streicher success in his duties. On behalf of the Kurdistan Parliament, he thanked Germany for its considerable support for Kurdistan Region in many areas, with humanitarian assistance to refugees and IDPs, capacity building and training, and during the war against ISIS terrorists.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami greatly appreciated the German Parliament’s extension of the German forces’ mandate in Iraq.

Dr. Hawrami commended the Bundestag’s recent resolution that recognizes the crimes committed by ISIS against the Yazidis as genocide. Mr. Streicher said he hopes that other nations’ parliaments will also recognize the Yazidi Genocide.

The Deputy Speaker and Germany’s Consul General agreed on the need to implement the Sinjar Agreement, so that people can safely return to their homes.

Other topics of their conversation were the ongoing talks between the KRG and the Iraqi Federal Government on outstanding issues, and the next Kurdistan Parliament election.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami and Consul General Streicher agreed that dialogue and compromise are needed to resolve problems.
