Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq chairs meeting on prisons with KRG ministers and other officials

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewaz Faiq on 8 January 2023 chaired a meeting to discuss concerns about Kurdistan Region’s prisons with the authorities. KRG Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Kwestan Muhammad and other officials took part in the meeting.

Parliament’s Social Affairs and Human Rights Committee prepared a comprehensive report for Parliament’s Presidency of their findings and recommendations after years of visits to prisons and meetings with prison authorities and inmates.

The committee raised many issues, including following the proper legal processes for prisoners, implementing international standards and improving prison conditions.

Head of the Independent Human Rights Commission Dr. Muna Yaqo, Minister for the Region for Parliament Affairs Dr. Vala Farid, the general prosecution service and the Presidency of the Region also gave their views and comments at the meeting.
