Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami receives Head of UNAMI Regional Office Mr. Ricardo Rodriguez

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 7 May 2023 received Mr. Ricardo Rodriguez, the Head of the UNAMI Office in the Kurdistan Region, with Ms. Sylvie Blanche, the Head of UNAMI’s Electoral Assistance in Baghdad.

They discussed the latest political developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq and the next Kurdistan Parliament elections.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami said, “The public in Kurdistan Region should be allowed to exercise their right to have timely, free and fair elections. We have made great efforts, held several meetings and given many opportunities to the political parties to reach an agreement on renewing the mandate of the election commission and on amending the Election Law, and the parties have different views on the election process. Apart from essential technical preparations, there is no excuse for failing to hold the elections on the set date.”

Dr. Hawrami asked UNAMI and the international community to observe and closely monitor the elections.

The political, legal and technical preparations for the elections were another topic of the meeting.
